Nomadic families of Tibetan and Mongolian descent are the principal keepers of domesticated yaks. Living year-round at elevations often exceeding 4,000m (13,100ft) on the harsh Tibetan plateaus and Mongolian steppes, the only thing as hearty as the yak itself are the families that tend the animals. These family groups depend on the yak for virtually all of their core needs - food, shelter and clothing.
But mere survival for these families in these conditions is not enough. A tendency exists to romanticize the austere and nomadic lifestyle of these yak-herding families. But the truth is it's largely out of necessity. While their needs may be far simpler than most of us in the modern western world, these nomads deserve the same opportunities to improve their lifestyle.
